Casey Thompson opens up on back-to-back Big Ten wins, momentum for Nebraska
The Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their third win of the season on Saturday against Rutgers. But not only was Saturday’s win Nebraska’s third win of the season, but it was the first time since 2018 that the Cornhuskers have won back-to-back games in the Big Ten conference. On Tuesday, starting quarterback, Casey Thompson opened up on the back-to-back Big Ten wins and the momentum it created for the team.
“I didn’t even know about that stat until after the game,” said Thompson. “I think it’s the first time winning two back-to-back Big Ten games since 2018. We want to build a culture of winning around here, but we have to focus on the process and winning on a daily bases. So, we’re just focused on taking one day at a time and one week at a time. And I think since Mickey Joseph has taken over, he’s done a good job of allowing us to focus on the task at hand and not get too ahead of ourselves.
“Before we can talk about any end-of-the-season awards and accolades, and goals, we just try to take it one day at a time. But it’s good for us as a team to get two wins under our belt, and we’re looking to continue that win streak.”

Nebraska will get a chance at the fourth one in the season and third-straight Big Ten victory on Saturday against the Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue currently sits at 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the conference. Currently, in the Big Ten West, there is a three-way tie for first place between those two teams and Illinois, who sits in first place because of their overall record of 5-1. If Nebraska can knock off the Boilermakers on the road Saturday, it would go a long way toward a possible berth in the Big Ten championship game.

Thompson on momentum
As far as momentum goes, individuals outside the program have been making some fuss about it. However, for Thompson, he is not too concerned with it and actually believes momentum is a farce.
“At this point in the season, it’s a long season, but momentum, I think, is more of an illusion,” said Thompson. “We talked about the process and taking it one day at a time is more important. We have a saying here: day by day. So, day by day, we want to get better and better until we can’t be beat.”
“That was our first time with our back against the wall; we were down in the second half, and we found a way to win. We’ve shown that we can do it. Everybody else sees it, we see it, and we know. So, inside the building, we have great confidence and great composture. And we’re just focusing on taking it one day at a time. Mickey is doing an incredible job, so we’re just going to continue to press on.”
