A pair of former offensive weapons for Texas are hitting the ground running together in Lincoln. Quarterback Casey Thompson transferred to Nebraska in December and wide receiver Marcus Washington joined him in May. With a lot of new surrounding for them both, their relationship has made the transition easier in the end.

Thompson talked about he and Washington’s relationship during media availability at the Cornhusker’s fall camp. He says their bond has only continued to grow and he believes Washington has gotten even better since they last played together.

“I would say that our relationship has continued to grow. It feels the exact same, same Marcus I knew at Texas,” said Thompson. “He’s better now, honestly. He looks quicker and faster than I remember seeing him. I guess the strength and conditioning he was doing down there worked out for him.”

Washington played seven games for the Longhorns last year and finished with 18 catches for 277 yards and a pair of touchdowns. With a boost in the wide receiver corp in Austin, he followed his QB to the Big Ten. Thompson says Washington’s improvement won’t be the only thing that helps the duo. He says their lingo from the Texas offense is helping Washington pick up the offense at Nebraska.

“He’s picked up the offense pretty good. I’ve tried to do my best to just translate the language,” Thompson said. “When he first got here it was funny because we’d have plays and we’d have stuff that we’d do (where) I’d give him a signal or a play that’s an old Texas play and I say run it just like this…or run it just like you did last year against (whoever). It’s just nice to have that experience and camaraderie with Marcus.”

The connection the two share will help them both on the field this season. In fact, it should help them off of it as well. Being a transfer can obviously be a lot for any player, even with former teammates coming with you. With their relationship off the field, though, Casey Thompson says they are acclimating well and ready to keep building with one another in 2022.

“We’re really good friends. We were roommates with each other last year. Every time we went to the hotel at Texas, we were roommate buddies on Friday nights. We talk a lot and we’re very close…Marcus is doing a great job. He’s really staying positive.”
