Dylan Raiola on Nebraska offense: 'I love it'

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are in the midst of a quarterback competition, with freshman Dylan Raiola pushing to take over as the starter early in his career.

Following the program’s spring game, Raiola met with the media. There, he shared that he’s extremely happy with the offense that he’s playing in.

“I love it,” Dylan Raiola said. “There’s many different variables to it. You know, whether it’s checks, you know, get us in the right play or, you know, the coaches just put us in a position to be successful. But no, I, I think it’s, it’s based on our playmakers. You know, we have a lot of those, we want to use them and, you know, we’re just trying to find ways to push the ball to our guys and, and watch them go work.”

Dylan Raiola is coming to Nebraska as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2024, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 21st-ranked player in the class.

The decision at starting quarterback is going to be a massive one for head coach Matt Rhule, who is looking to get the Cornhuskers back to a bowl game for the first time since 2016. Along with Dylan Raiola, Heinrich Haarberg and Daniel Kaelin are competing for the job.

“I want the quarterbacks to feel like they have the race and all of a sudden I want the other guy to come along and try to challenge him,” Rhule said. “I think it’ll elevate all of us. And then when we know we know, but I wouldn’t anticipate us saying hey, this guy is the starter like today, you know? Because I thought all three quarterbacks went out there and said, hey, I can be the starter and that’s my challenge for the players is don’t worry about where you stand.”

After the spring game, Dylan Raiola broke down what he thought he did well during the game.

“I tried to get the ball out, tried not to take too many sacks. Unfortunately, we had two turnovers. I had one so, you know, just [need to] kind of grow from that. I think just keep rolling on what we did right and fix the wrong,” Raiola said.

“It was funny. I saw — I missed that touchdown in practice on Tuesday. I threw a check down on Tuesday. I went back and watched the tape and I saw the post safety, he didn’t get to the middle. So, you know Jaylen [Lloyd], as fast as he is I knew once he got up on the corner’s toes that it was over with and he made the rest happen.”
