Former Nebraska DB Corey Collier Jr. announces transfer to Florida A&M
Former Nebraska defensive back Corey Collier Jr. announced his transfer to Florida A&M, according to his Twitter profile.
“Different route, same goal,” Collier wrote on Twitter, which including tags of the program and coaches.
Collier began his career with the Florida Gators but eventually transferred. He spent just one year with the Huskers. Collier saw action in five games in 2023 and did not record a tackle.
He was no longer listed on the Nebraska roster as of February 14th. Last spring, Collier appeared to be in a position to see significant snaps but was surpassed by players like Deshon Singleton, Marques Buford and Omar Brown on the defense’s back end.
As a member of the Class of 2021, Collier was a four-star recruit out of Miami (Fla.) Palmetto, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 16 overall prospect in the state, the No. 7 cornerback in the class and the No. 110 overall prospect in the class.

Collier took advantage of the current system and will look elsewhere to continue his career. Someone like head coach Matt Rhule won’t exactly fault him for that.

“I think if anybody on our team wants to go on the portal it’s open today,” Rhule said earlier this spring. “I mean obviously no one has yet, I don’t anticipate anybody going in when we get done with spring. We’ll have a couple guys left a couple days to see if something’s best for them. Our guys are really transparent.
“We’ve had players on our team already have people from other teams contact them you know, come in, walk in, say ‘Coach, look at this.’ Shows us a text message … Just it’s a sad, sad state of college football when, you know, but the problem is not the players. Let me start there. Problem is not the players.”
Rhule’s philosophy is to push his players, such as Collier, to greatness, regardless if the portal is looming or not.
“The worst thing you could ever do for a young person is not have high standards for them and not push them to greatness,” Rhule said. “So if you’re afraid of pushing them because they might go to the portal, you probably don’t have the right guy anyway. So I’m sure things will happen. Good, bad, but I’m gonna coach the guys to try to get the team better. And pour everything we have into our players both on the field, off the field and personally, and if something happens, it happens.”
