Josiah Allick is putting his coaching career on hold, for now.

Nebraska‘s 83-75 loss to No. 25 Maryland marked the final game that Allick served as a graduate assistant on Fred Hoiberg’s staff. Earlier in the week, it was announced that Allick was signing with the Southland Sharks from the National Basketball League (NBL) in New Zealand.

Hoiberg spoke to Allick’s contributions to his staff, and the team when he was a part of the roster last year.

“More than anything, I’m thankful that I was able to spend the time that I did with Josiah Allick last year as a player, helping us get to the NCAA Tournament,” Hoiberg said after the game. “Coming home, he had a lot of options on the table. We’ll always be thankful for Josiah for playing a huge role in getting our team back and really helping stick with the culture that Sam Griesel and Emmanuel Bandoumel provided for this team.

“He’s been great for the young guys. He’s been awesome for our freshmen, for Braden [Frager] and Nick [Janowski] and Justin [Bolis]. He’s done whatever we’ve asked him to do, which isn’t easy to do as a player. He still has a player’s mentality. But if he has to go out and get coffee for everybody, then he got coffee for us. So I’m excited about this opportunity for Josiah, and I know he’s going to do great.”

Allick, a Lincoln native, played one season for the Huskers (2023-24), where he appeared in 33 games and logged 27 starts. He averaged 7.3 points per game over that stretch, including 5.4 defensive rebounds.

He arrived at Nebraska after spending one season with New Mexico. This came after a three-year stint at Kansas City, where he began his career. The best season of his career came during the abbreviated 2020-21 season, where he averaged 15.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds for the Roos.

As Allick moves on to begin his professional career overseas, the Huskers will continue their push toward the postseason. At 16-9 overall (6-8, Big Ten), ESPN’s Joe Lunardi currently has Nebraska slated as a 10-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

There are six games left of the Huskers’ schedule, and Ken Pom is predicting Nebraska split those games, including a loss to Northwestern on Sunday.

Tip-off between the Cornhuskers and Wildcats is set for 3 p.m. ET live on the Big Ten Network.
