Greg McElroy says Matt Rhule hire 'could not be a better situation' for Nebraska
Greg McElroy is in love with the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ hire at head coach. Nebraska pulled out all the stops to acquire former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. And according to McElroy, the hire ‘could not be a better situation’ for both Nebraska and Rhule.
“I think Nebraska really sweetened the deal for him,” said McElroy. “He said no originally; they came back to him because they were persistent. Trev Alberts said I will not take no for an answer; I’m going to get it done, and they did. Could not be a better situation, I think, for Nebraska to go out and get a guy that’s done more with less and that has identified diamonds in the rough already in the past on the recruiting trail. Did a great job at Temple. Did a great job at Baylor, and will do a great job at Nebraska as well. The guy has won everywhere he’s been.”
Nebraska and Rhule agreed to an eight-year, $74 million deal, it was announced during his introductory press conference late last year. That contract put him in the top echelon of head coaches in the Big Ten money-wise, competing with the likes of Jim Harbaugh at Michigan and Ryan Day at Ohio State.

“I think he is an A plus. I’m so excited about the possibility of him taking what is a crazy good NIL situation, a crazy proud fan base, and the ability to now go out and recruit in the state of Texas, where he’s familiar, I might add. What have we talked about forever with Nebraska? When they left the Big 12, they left the state of Texas behind them. So I think he is poised to win for the first time in a while. Look at the hire; it’s an A, no doubt about it.
Rhule has yet to call a play or conduct a practice at Nebraska. But given his success at previous stops throughout the college football landscape, there is plenty for Cornhusker fans to be excited about. Now how long it takes for Rhule to build the program into a powerhouse will depend on several things, some of which are out of his control. But to have a guy that’s successful on the recruiting trail and that has shown the capability to turn your program around is exactly what Nebraska needs right now.
