JD PicKell: It's going to be a full reset at Nebraska
After firing their head coach, Scott Frost, following an embarrassing Week 2 loss at home to Georgia Southern, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have continued to make changes to their program. And given their most recent move, On3’s JD PicKell believes that the program has already sounded the horn; it’s time for a full reset.
“As far as it pertains to Nebraska, what I think we learned is this is truly going to be a full reset. Whether it’s Mickey Joseph or some other head coach that comes in and takes that job, it’s going to be a full reset at Nebraska,” said PicKell. “It’s going to take a full reset this season for them to be competitive. They just fired the defensive coordinator. There’s going to be some things that are still sort of working around here. Bill Bush is going to be the defensive coordinator going forward.”
After an embarrassing loss to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, 49-14, Nebraska fired their defensive coordinator Erik Chainander. His defense allowed the aforementioned 49 points along with 580 yards of total offense for the Sooners. Interim head coach Mickey Joseph announced the decision shortly after the game.
While it might feel like dark days are upon the Nebraska program, PicKell points out that there are plenty of things to build on with the current team. The Nebraska offense and the playmakers they have on that side of the ball are just a few of the things that he mentions.

“But when it comes to this team the rest of the way, they still have some players on this team, especially on offense. They got some guys. We were really high on Casey Thompson coming into the year. I don’t think we’re wrong on that. They were averaging 35 (points per game) coming into this game. The offense has got some juice. They got Anthony Grant and a lot of playmakers. As a team, within this program, they’re still going to have to find their footing, and it’s not gonna be this coming season.”
“So, Nebraska fans, hang on tight. I think help is on the way. I think whoever you get in there has a chance to do a lot with the talent in this locker room. But in terms of what you already have in place, in terms of the structure you have in place, it might be a little bit of a waiting game past 2022.”
The list of potential candidates for the Cornhuskers program is long and wide. The team is looking at options throughout the landscape rumored candidates include former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, former Penn State head coach who is currently the offensive coordinator at Alabama Bill O’Brien, and even the Iowa State Cyclones head coach Matt Campbell. Regardless of who they choose, that individual will have their work cut out for them rebuilding the program. But at least they will have a solid offense to start.
