Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims has some old rivals now as teammates with the Huskers, seeing how he didn’t like Georgia.

The former Georgia Tech quarterback has a few Bulldogs on his squad now: offensive lineman Jacob Hood, linebacker MJ Sherman and tight end Arik Gilbert. It’s not like Sims gave his new teammates the death glare.

But now they’re all working together as the season rapidly approaches in Lincoln.

“While I was at Georgia Tech, I wasn’t expecting to be anywhere else, I’m a very loyal guy,” Sims said at Big Ten Media Days. “So, but being on the team with three Georgia teammates, some on defense, one of them on the o-line, and oh, Arik Gilbert. We like each other (laugh). I will say me and MJ Sherman are really close. That’s somebody that I really liked. You know, Jacob Hood, he’s a cool dude. Arik Gilbert, big target. He’s a guy that goes and attacks the ball. So it’s been good.”

Gilbert is the fascinating one of the bunch, considering Sims has to throw him the ball. A wild college career eventually led him to Nebraska.

He started at LSU in 2020 but entered the transfer portal after standing out as a true freshman. After seemingly transferring to Florida, Gilbert did not end up in Gainesville. Instead, he transferred to Georgia.

But he didn’t really see Sims on the opposite side of the field. Gilbert played in just two games over the course of two years in Athens.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Gilbert was a five-star recruit out of Marietta (Ga.) High, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 1 tight end in the class and the No. 5 overall prospect in the class.

So Sims has some quality alongside him from Georgia, despite being a Yellow Jacket. They all have to get along

Hood is a former three-star lineman out of Nashville (Tenn.) Hillsboro while Sherman logged 14 tackles, one for loss and 0.5 sacks in limited appearances over the last three years at Georgia.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Sherman was a five-star recruit out of Baltimore (M.D.) St. John’s, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 2 overall prospect in the D.C. area, the No. 6 linebacker in the class and the No. 31 overall prospect in the class.

Sims has to share the Georgia college heritage with some old rivals, but they all could be key to turning things around in Nebraska this fall.
