The Cornhuskers have their quarterback. On Thursday at Big Ten Media Days, Nebraska QB Jeff Sims broke down his decision to transfer to Lincoln this offseason.

“Coming into Lincoln, I knew I was going to have to compete, but my biggest focus was to work on myself and get better in every aspect that I can,” Sims told On3’s Andy Staples. “That’s what I did, and I guess it turned out well.”

Yes, it did. After former Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson entered the transfer portal, Sims secured the starting spot behind center. However, it isn’t Sims’ first time leading an offense.

History of success

In 2022, Sims started eight games at Georgia Tech before suffering a season-ending foot strain. He threw 110 completions and 1,114 passing yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. The air wasn’t the only place Sims found success.

The 6-foot-4 junior also had 405 rushing yards on 49 carries, racking up one touchdown on the ground. While Sims found success with the Yellow Jackets, he believes the Cornhuskers’ system will be an even better fit.

“I love the fact that the offense had multiple dimensions, and it was very versatile. And I think it’s an offense that will prepare me for my future and help me take the next step that I want to take,” Sims added.

Jeff Sims isn’t alone

With an entirely new coaching staff at Nebraska this season, Sims isn’t the only one taking next steps. The Florida native will be joined in his journey by head coach Matt Rhule and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield.

Satterfield believes Sims is poised for a standout campaign.

“He’s tough. I think that he’s a good leader,” the Nebraska offensive coordinator said. “I think he’s a competitor. I think his skill set from an athletic standpoint is off the charts. I’m in there watching and I think he power cleaned like 245 last week. He’s 6-foot-4, he’s put on some good weight. He looks like he could play linebacker right now.

“I think his ability to understand football. He’s played a lot of football. He’s been in some good offenses. He’s been coached by some really good guys. I think just his ability to function out there from a cerebral standpoint at quarterback is great. His athletic traits are off the charts. His arm talent is really high-level. I think that he’s poised to have a breakout year.”

Fans won’t have to wait long to witness Nebraska’s new look. Watch Sims and his fellow Cornhuskers hit the field against Minnesota in their season opener on Aug. 31.
