Jeff Sims opens up on draw to Nebraska, what the Cornhuskers are getting
The Nebraska offense relied on a transfer quarterback last year and looks set to do so again with Georgia Tech‘s Jeff Sims ready to take the reins.
Sims accompanied coach Matt Rhule to the Big Ten Media Days, where he met with reporters and let Nebraska fans know exactly what they’re getting.
“Nebraska is getting an elite passer and a dangerous runner,” Jeff Sims said. “I’m a great leader. I would say I’m a great leader and I’m a guy that is going to put it all on the line for my team.”
Sims was very productive at Georgia Tech, where he suited up for the last three years. Injuries slowed him in 2022, when he finished with 1,115 yards passing and five touchdowns against three interceptions.
The Georgia Tech quarterback is a true dual-threat quarterback, too, having rushed for 11 career touchdowns while topping the 300-yard mark on the ground in each of his three seasons.
When Sims was considering his options in the transfer portal following the firing of coach Geoff Collins, he found the fit he was looking for at Nebraska.
“On my visit I was talking with coach Rhule and coach (Marcus Satterfield) and I was just listening to their goals and their vision for this year and the future,” Jeff Sims said. “It just aligned with what I wanted. Just the fanbase, I heard the fanbase is very nice and very supportive. I just always wanted to be around a college that has fans like that and is in a college town. It was just the right fit.”

How well that fit goes could go a long way in determining just how far Rhule can bring along his program rebuild in Year 1.
There’s a lot of work to do at Nebraska after several down seasons. The Huskers haven’t had a winning campaign since 2016 and are just 23-45 since then.
Still, Sims just might have the stuff to make a big difference.
“I think he’s a guy that composes himself very well and he’s like, Jeff said, he’s a great leader on the field, but he’s also the best leader off the field,” teammate Ethan Piper said.
In his three-year career, Jeff Sims is 364-of-633 passing for 4,464 yards, with 30 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He has also run for 1,1166 yards and 11 touchdowns.
