Recently, Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule revealed that he is challenging his team to earn respect back for the program. And quarterback Jeff Sims believes that there is a way that they can do it quickly and effectively.

Nebraska has not been viewed as much of a threat since their powerhouse days in the 90s. Even worse, in recent history, they have become one of the lower-rung football programs of the Big Ten, failing to qualify for a bowl game since the 2016 season.

But Rhule and Simms are looking to change the perception of the Cornhuskers football program and do it fast. They can achieve that this year by playing for one another, according to their quarterback.

“We just gotta go out there and play for each other,” said Sims. “We can’t worry about what other people think. We can’t worry about outside noises. We gotta go out there and build the brotherhood and come together as a team. And we just gotta go out there and put it all on the line for our brothers.”

But does Simms believe that this goal is obtainable for the Cornhuskers in the near future? Simply put, “Yes,” he does.

Earlier in the month, at Big Ten Media Days, Sims was given the opportunity to break down his decision to transfer to Lincoln this offseason.

Last season, at Georgia Tech, the 6-foot-4 junior quarterback started in eight games for the Yellow Jackets before suffering a season-ending foot strain. He threw 110 completions and 1,114 passing yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.

“Coming into Lincoln, I knew I was going to have to compete, but my biggest focus was to work on myself and get better in every aspect that I can,” Sims told On3’s Andy Staples. “That’s what I did, and I guess it turned out well.”

Yes, it did. After former Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson entered the transfer portal, Sims secured the starting spot behind center. And while Sims was successful in Georgia Tech’s offense through the air on the ground, he believes the Cornhuskers’ system will be an even better fit.

“I love the fact that the offense had multiple dimensions, and it was very versatile. And I think it’s an offense that will prepare me for my future and help me take the next step that I want to take,” Sims added.
