Joshua Overbeek is proud of the way his first season at Nebraska unfolded. The Cornhuskers accomplished a lot, including winning their first Big Ten Tournament title since 2005 and also snapping a two-year NCAA Tournament drought.

Unfortunately, their journey would end in Regional play as they fell 17-11 in a high-scoring battle against Florida. Despite the loss, Overbeek chose to focus on the positive in his postgame press conference.

“Praise be to God to be able to wear this uniform across my chest,” he said. “It’s Lou Gehrig Day. There’s a lot of people who aren’t as fortunate as we are with disease and sickness. Just a chance that we get to lace up our cleats and go out there and take the field. It just fires you up each and every time. Looking back on the season, there’s a lot to be proud of but there’s also a lot of work to be done.”

Overbeek transferred to Nebraska this offseason after spending one year at Cisco College (TX), where he finished as the runner-up Conference Player of the Year. He played his true freshman season in 2022 for Pittsburgh.

Overbeek started in 49 of 51 games he appeared in to finish with 51 hits and six home runs on a .276 batting average. He led the Cornhuskers with four RBI and went 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss to the Gators, including a home run.

Now he’ll turn his sights toward next season as he will have one more year of eligibility remaining.

As Nebraska turns its attention toward the offseason, Joshua Overbeek is optimistic the team can continue to build on its accomplishments from this season. All in all, it was an encouraging performance in the fifth year under coach Will Bolt despite the disappointing end.

He made a promise that the Cornhuskers would return to the NCAA Tournament in 2025, this time hoping to make it into Super Regionals and potentially the College World Series.

“We’re gonna continue to put our head down and come back next year even stronger,” he said. “To learn from that, look back, review some film and understand where we can be better next time around. We’re gonna be back in a Regional and being a Nebraska baseball player is a blessing in itself.”
