LOOK: Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph at 4-star ATH Malachi Coleman's game
On Sunday, Nebraska fired head coach Scott Frost after just over four seasons with the Cornhuskers. Wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph was elevated to serve as interim head coach.
Two days before Nebraska’s game against Oklahoma, Joseph is out on the recruiting trail. He took a short trip with running backs coach Bryan Applewhite to see Lincoln (Neb.) Lincoln East four-star athlete Malachi Coleman, one of the Cornhuskers’ top targets in the 2023 cycle.
Coleman is the No. 81 overall prospect and No. 2 athlete in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 1 player in Nebraska.
The 6-foot-5, 190 pound prospect is announcing his commitment on Oct. 15. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Nebraska has a 97.9% chance to land Coleman’s pledge.

RPM was released to the public in December. The On3 engineering group teamed up with Spiny.ai to create the industry’s first algorithm and machine learning-based product to predict where athletes will attend college.
It factors in machine learning, social sentiment, visits and historical trends. However, expert predictions are still a big piece of the RPM equation.
“I want to play for a school that is making progress, trending up, and winning,” Coleman told On3’s Chad Simmons about his decision. “The position I play and relationships are important to me, but winning is something I am looking at very seriously.

“Where I go, I want to win and play for a winning coaching staff.”
Coleman would be a massive win for Nebraska’s 2023 class
Nebraska made Coleman’s top seven schools alongside Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon and USC. He is taking his eighth visit to see the Cornhuskers this weekend for the Oklahoma game.
If Coleman chooses Nebraska, he would immediately the highest-ranked commit in the Cornhuskers’ 2023 recruiting class. Vivian (La.) North Caddo four-star wide receiver Omarion Miller is currently the highest-rated pledge in Nebraska’s group as the No. 167 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus.
Despite Frost’s firing, multiple Nebraska commits posted graphics yesterday which indicated their pledges to the Cornhuskers would remain intact. That list includes Miller, Argyle (Texas) four-star defensive lineman Riley Van Poppel and Lincoln (Neb.) Lincoln Southeast three-star offensive lineman Gunnar Gottula.
Nebraska’s class currently contains 14 commitments. The group ranks No. 32 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 7 in the Big 10.
