Marcus Satterfield gives early impressions of Nebraska's roster
Former South Carolina offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield decided to make moves this offseason and join forces with newly anointed Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule out in Lincoln. While Rhule struggled mightily with the Carolina Panthers, his track record as a college head coach is tough to top. This spring will be especially important for the new Husker coaching staff to get comfortable with their players and personnel. Recently, Satterfield decided to sit down with the media and give his early impressions of the Huskers’ roster.
“I love this team. I love [the] offense, [the] defense. Not just the offense, but just from the offseason. [From] the competition week to the first couple of days of spring practice. These guys compete. They like to play football. They like each other. They like being around each other. They like competing against each other,” Satterfield said.
The former Gamecocks’ offensive coordinator said the team has really impressed him so far.
“So, I’m real excited about where I think [we can go]. I’m not coming out of three days and thinking, ‘Oh crap. This isn’t what I thought it was going to be. It’s even higher than I possibly thought it would be. From just, what we have a chance to do here,” Satterfield said.
Satterfield has every reason to be excited, because the Huskers landed one of the nation’s most coveted tight end prospects in the transfer portal, former Georgia Bulldog Arik Gilbert. Gilbert is a former five-star-plus+ prospect who was rated as the nation’s No. 1 tight end in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He’s oozing with jaw-dropping ability and a tantalizing skill set. It’s just a matter of him staying healthy and staying on the field for the Huskers.

Not only does he have a tantalizing tight end to dream about, but the Huskers landed one of the nation’s most exciting quarterback prospects in the transfer portal this offseason in former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Jeff Sims. Sims has pretty ball fakes and is a very smooth runner in the open field. The most yards he’s rushed for during his college football career thus far came in 2020, when he piled up 492 yards on the ground. Sims will be competing with Casey Thompson for the starting job under center this fall.
At the running back position, Satterfield will have junior running back Anthony Grant to tote the rock. He had an impressive showing last year, rushing for 915-yards. Unfortunately, he’s suspended for the start of spring practices due to academics. In his place, sophomore Gabe Ervin, Jr. has emerged as one of the Huskers’ offensive stars this offseason, according to Matt Rhule.
The Cornhuskers have plenty of exciting new weapons and tools in the arsenal, it’ll just be a matter of making sure all the pieces click together when it counts this fall.
