First-year Nebraska coach Matt Rhule shared high praise for his incoming transfer quarterback Jeff Sims ahead of their first season together. Sims was one of the biggest prospects in the transfer portal this year, coming off three seasons with Georgia Tech as he brings a veteran presence to the Cornhuskers.

In his three seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Sims threw for 4,464 yards, 30 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in his career so far.

Matt Rhule on the addition of Jeff Sims

“I told Jeff I feel like I know him,” Rhule told 247Sports. “Geoff Collins, who was the head coach there, is a great friend of mine, worked together. He came in to Temple after I was the head coach  and I even came and visited them at Baylor when they first got the job. So I’ve watched him play a ton, I watched him play while I was in the NFL.

“To me he’s the total package, he’s an NFL player and he’s an even better person. And so I think he’s obviously a dual-threat quarterback but he can beat you throwing the football, and so when we got him that was really really big for us. He’s gonna attract a lot of attention and I think make us a legitimate threat with the competition.”

Sims, a Florida native, played high school football at Sandalwood where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 18 quarterback recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
