Matt Rhule is confident in his plan at Nebraska, even in Year 1 with the Huskers compared to his other stops.

Rhule conceded each of college stops (Temple and Baylor) started off with rocky first seasons. But, the teams picked it up right after that rough patch.

This time, Rhule said this team could win right away. How much Nebraska could win under Rhule in Year 1 remains to be seen.

“My history has been we never win the first year,” Rhule said. “I do feel like, I’ve told the seniors this, there’s such a good group of seniors that really want to win. So we’re trying to win, right? I’ve never not tried them and it’s just more like, well, the seniors weren’t really bought in and didn’t do what I was asking at Baylor, then I’m just gonna play the young guys.”

Rhule mentioned how his entire group, especially the veterans, are bought in on the 2023 campaign first and foremost.

“These guys love Nebraska and they want to win so badly,” Rhule said. “They have a chance to be the team that got back to a bowl game. So we’re gonna chase that … And even a guy like Jeff Sims you know he’s, he’s potentially a two-year player so I think we made the most of that.

“The big thing for me was just bringing in guys who I thought were really competitive. So there’d be a competitive toughness within the organization that matches some of the guys that are there.”

Will Compton confident in Matt Rhule bring Nebraska back

Former Huskers linebacker Will Compton said Nebraska lived in the past too much over the last few years, especially since after Bo Pelini’s tenure. Pelini coached Compton when the linebacker was in college and even then, the Huskers were competitive.

To get back to the golden years, like the 1990s, Compton was confident in Rhule to usher in a great new era of Nebraska football.

“Come on, what are we talking about,” Compton said on Next Up with Adam Breneman. “Coach Rhule, he’s going to get this thing turned around. I think we got to do away with the 90s. I think it’s nice to reminisce about and the legacy of it, but it’s good to look back and see where we were (but) now, we just got to get the squad back to when Bo Pelini was there and when we’re winning (expletive) nine, 10 games a year.

“But yeah, I think Nebraska will be back as early as this year. And when I say back, I mean a bowl game. We’re going to hit a bowl game this year. That’s my expectation for the team. But I love Coach Rhule. His interview (with us on Bussin’ with the Boys) was incredible. I think he’s a good football coach. I think he’s got a lot of good guys on his staff that are good football coaches, guys that can relate to the players. Nebraska has all the resources in the world and the right people the right amount of money to be successful. It’s just getting guys there because the middle of (nowhere) … But, Nebraska will be back. Mark my words.”
