For all the comparisons between the two, there’s now a true difference between QB Patrick Mahomes and Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola.

While on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ at the NFL Combine on Thursday, Matt Rhule was asked if Raiola would soon be getting a buzz cut to match Mahomes’ new look. He said that his quarterback actually may have had plans for a haircut around the same time and since cancelled on it to avoid the bit altogether.

“It’s funny. You know, if I’m being honest, I think he was going to cut his hair anyway and then, when Mahomes did, it was like, (no),” Rhule joked.

From there, though, Rhule continued his high praise of Raiola after his freshman season in Lincoln.

Raiola is already a player and person that they love to have in the program. They’re now on him even more to continue being that and more for the Cornhuskers.

“He came there, his parents trusted him to come here and he came there not because of my offensive philosophy because, you know, I’m not renowned for that,” Rhule said. “It’s the other part. Like, I do not want him showing up someday as the first pick and going to some team in New York or some team in LA and, all of a sudden, for the first time in his life, he’ll experience adversity. Yeah, he has fun, he runs around, he celebrates. He does all the things but he’s in there every morning at six and, when he doesn’t do something right, he’s hearing about it from me. And, if he misses a nutrition appointment and he wants to show up to throw, I’m like, no, you’re not allowed to throw today because you missed your nutrition appointment. So, he’s getting all that stuff.

“I’m just saying, be 19 and be famous. Like, be 19 and be famous. He’s 19. He’s famous. But I’ll say this. When my two daughters walk in the building, like, he stops whatever he does for Vivienne and Leona. When he sees the AD’s son walk in, he knows their names. He sees my wife? ‘Mrs. Julie’. Like, he’s a great kid,” Rule continued. “Social media paints people different ways. I wish all of our kids were like Dylan is. You know what, he’s a work in progress. We’re all works in progress. But, if tomorrow morning, and the mat drill isn’t good, he’s going to hear about it and he’ll do it again the next day. So, don’t worry about him. He’ll be fine.”

Raiola has earned those comps, for better or worse, to Mahomes for a reason. That includes his play on the field to this point with Nebraska.

“He’s going to be a guy. Yeah, he’ll be a guy,” said Rhule. “I love the kid. Whatever team gets him in three years? They’re going to get a guy.”
