Nebraska has not had much luck in finding successful football coaches over the last decade or so. But Cornhusker faithful are hoping that their newest white knight, Matt Rhule, can turn the program around like he did Baylor. According to Rhule’s opening press conference, he plans to do just that: bring Nebraska football back to the gold standard.

Monday afternoon, Rhule revealed that he has re-found his spark for coaching football, and there’s no better place for him to be right now than Lincoln.

“I’m here today because the passion for football was reborn inside me. The passion for young people was reborn inside of me,” said Rhule. “We came to Lincoln, and we snuck into Lincoln. We drove around and said…you know what, this place is committed to greatness, that’s committed to player development. Look at this facility. These are people that love their university, love their state, love their football team.”

Matt Rhule is adamant that he can usher in a new era of Nebraska football. One that more closely represents the great ‘Huskers runs of the past.

“So as people ask me…I am here because this is the right fit. It’s the right time. And if I have one message for you: We can absolutely do it. We can absolutely get the University of Nebraska football exactly where it’s supposed to be. It will be hard, it may take time, but it will be done.”

It will be hard and it will most certainly take time to build this Nebraska program back into what it was 30-some-odd years ago. But whatever the program can be in the 21st century, Rhule is determined to build the best version of it.

And for the opportunity, he thanks the Nebraska AD and school president.

“So thank you Trev [Alberts], thank you President [Ted] Carter, for setting a vision for us that made us decide to call this home,” Rhule said to wrap up his comments on the matter.

Cornhuskers seem to have found the right guy, even if building back to national relevance will take a handful of years.
