Matt Rhule was blown away by the Nebraska Huskers fan support since he was hired as the team’s new football coach.

Husker fans are notoriously loyal and show up for just about everything and anything on campus. The football program is no different.

Joining Sirius XM College Sports Radio, Rhule detailed what he loved about the fans and what he wants to bring back to Nebraska football.

“It’s staggering,” Rhule said of the Nebraska fan loyalty. “It’s not just words. It’s not just social media presence. I mean, you go to a Tuesday night, you know, other sporting events (are nuts). My first wrestling match, my first women’s basketball, men’s basketball game and our crowds are packed, because people really, really truly care and believe in what Nebraska Cornhusker athletics means.

“I think the word to me is loyalty. You know, the football fans have been loyal for a long time. And so for me, I know we have to be loyal back. We have to work hard and work in a way that brings back success. People that have been sitting through tough seasons can go back to sitting through winning seasons and going on bowl trips and eventually competing for championships.”

Matt Rhule thankful for buy-in from Nebraska players

According to the guy who took over the Cornhuskers, Rhule said the team has really taken well to his style of coaching. He said after the spring scrimmage this past weekend that the players are buying in.

“Well, I’m grateful to the players for how hard they’ve tried to buy into what we’re asking them to do,” said Rhule. “This will be so much easier for them next year. Like every day is hard for them because it’s hard for the new coaches because everything’s so new, you know, when I say like, ‘Hey, we’re gonna do this drill,’ it’s like they don’t know what the drill is. Next year they’ll know what to expect. So, I just really appreciate that part about them and they’re going to just get better and better and better.”

Rhule also said that he’s prioritized meeting with players to figure out how they and the staff view themselves as apart of the team. However, that was a new experience for some of the guys.

There’s plenty of more time to sort it all out but for now, Rhule likes the culture of Nebraska.
