Matt Rhule discusses how Nebraska quarterbacks are adjusting to system
Matt Rhule revealed how quarterbacks Jeff Sims and Casey Thompson adjusted to the new offensive system at Nebraska.
Well, Sims and Thompson and the favorites to compete for the starting job. Sims transferred in from Georgia Tech and Thompson started last season under Scott Frost and Mickey Joseph after he transferred in from Texas.
But Rhule acknowledged all of the quarterbacks received quality reps.
“They’ve gotten a lot better,” Rhule said. “They’ve done a really nice job. That scrimmage on Saturday really helped them I think … They mixed in a live day last week when they were live down the red zone. I think that that’s really helping our quarterbacks. And, you know, just the repetition of, you know, again, when you’re trying to get four quarterbacks ready, that’s tough. So that repetition, the way we’re practicing, always have at least two, sometimes three drills going at once. That’s kind of a blueprint that coach Osborne laid out, you know, we’re trying to maximize that so that you know, they’re getting a ton of reps.”
Sims played 25 games at Georgia Tech and finished with 4,464 yards, 30 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, a 57.5% completion percentage, 1,152 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Sims was a four-star recruit out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 41 overall prospect in Florida, the No. 18 quarterback in the class and the No. 261 overall prospect in the class.
Now that Sims is at Nebraska, he could improve in Rhule’s offense, but Thompson is still there. He finished the 2022 season with 2,407 yards, 17 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, a 63.1% completion percentage and five rushing touchdowns.
“Yeah, I don’t have expectations for anybody just because, as I said, like I think guys actually give everyone a kind of a clean slate,” Rhule said when asked about Thompson in February. “You know, when I watched Casey play last year, I thought he played really, really well. I thought he was. I thought, he was making key throws, shows elite timing in the passing game. You know, he’s just got to get healthy.”
