Dylan Raiola arrived in Lincoln with high expectations and despite not yet being named the starter, he has met them. Head coach Matt Rhule has raved about his freshman quarterback over the past few months. Nothing changed Wednesday at Big Ten Media Days when asked about Railoa’s impact on the program.

From a pure football standpoint, Rhule believes Raiola was “born to play quarterback.” Not just because of his ability with his arm but the game just makes sense to Raiola. Growing up in a football family certainly helps and made learning different aspects a lot easier.

“He was born to play quarterback,” Rhule said. “He has the arm talent but the game makes sense to him. A lot of players, they can operate systems. Dylan is playing football. He understands the game. His Dad, obviously, 14 years in the NFL, he understands the o-line side.”

The Raiola family is present in the Nebraska coaching staff as well. His uncle, Dominic, is the offensive line coach under Rhule. Family runs deep inside the program and can make a huge impact beginning in 2024.

Dylan Raiola has earned respect of his teammates

Coming in as a freshman while hoping to be a leader is difficult, no matter the position. Playing quarterback only adds to the level, especially at a program like Nebraska. High-end players are constantly walking through the door but sometimes, a little time needs to pass before being fully embraced.

Raiola and his work ethic have meant his teammates have instantly respected the freshman. There has been no entitlement from him. Just keeping his head down, getting to work, and attempting to get better every day ahead of the 2024 season.

“I love the fact that he’s this big recruit, he came in — he just worked,” Rhule said. “He did the mat drills. He didn’t have a lot of opinions. He just worked and earned the player’s respect. He has a lot of work to do, college football is hard. But I know this. He’s going to be there at 6:00 in the morning and he’s going to be there at 5:00 at night. Players respect that.”

Raiola played high school football at Buford (GA) High School, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 21 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
