Matt Rhule targeting former assistant, South Carolina OC Marcus Satterfield
New Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule is making some fast moves to fill his first staff in Lincoln. He has reportedly wrangled two Carolina Panthers staffers to join him in Lincoln, as well as Evan Cooper, a former Panthers and Baylor staffer, already. Now, according to FootballScoop‘s John Brice, Rhule has turned his sights to the offensive side.
Sources revealed to Brice that South Carolina offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield is a “top target” after he coached with Rhule at Temple, Baylor and Carolina. Satterfield joined Shane Beamer’s inaugural staff on a two-year deal, which runs out this January.
Marcus Satterfield served as Rhule’s offensive coordinator at Temple from 2013 until 2015.

Rhule hired Satterfield again at Baylor to serve as his director of recruiting in 2018, then as tight ends coach for the 2019 season. He followed Rhule to the Carolina Panthers, where he was on staff as an assistant offensive line coach for a season. In Columbus, Satterfield helped the Gamecocks reach an 8-4 mark this season, including an upset win over Clemson last week.
Also a target for Rhule, according to FootballScoop, former one-time LSU offensive coordinator Jake Peetz. Peetz is currently an offensive assistant for the L.A. Rams and he is a Nebraska graduate.
Rhule pulls from Carolina staff for Nebraska
According to a report from Joe Person, assistant defensive line coach Terrance Knighton and assistant strength coach Corey Campbell are the two latest additions.
Person also shared that more stragglers from Rhule’s Panthers staff could eventually leave the NFL for the Big Ten program, but only confirmed the departure of Knighton and Campbell.
Terrance Knighton and Corey Campbell join former defensive backs coach Evan Cooper. Cooper is reportedly joining Rhule at Nebraska as he has elsewhere in the past.

In his second year with Carolina, Knighton played seven seasons as a defensive tackle in the NFL from 2009-15. He was a third-round draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009 after playing for Temple from 2005-2008.
Campbell joined Rhule in Carolina from Baylor, where served four years as director of athletic performance. He played fullback at Georgia from 2010-13.
Matt Rhule and Nebraska agreed to an eight-year contract totaling $72 million, per reports. The deal will earn Rhule around $9 million per season. It makes him one of the highest-paid head coaches in college football.
Rhule was fired as head coach of the Carolina Panthers earlier this season after a poor start. Now, the program-building head coach is ready to start from scratch in Lincoln after the Huskers announced the signing Saturday.
