Following a recent event at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce I Husker, the team over at Husker Online caught up to Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule. There was a number of questions on their mind, including getting Rhule’s thoughts on the current state of the team’s roster.

When asked whether or not he had filled up his 85 scholarship roster slots, here is what the Cornhuskers’ headman had to say.

“Yeah, and I hope you guys understand from my perspective, there are some things that are still like kind of out there. But we still have room if we need to do something,” said Rhule.

“We have the head coach exception. We have one or two guys who’ve asked to do that. And I won’t share their names right now because that’s their personal business. Maybe they didn’t ask, but we talked about it; it was the right thing. But not a ton of those guys.”

There are still a few availabilities, scholarship-wise, for players looking to join Rhule in Nebraska. The Cornhuskers recently lost three quarterbacks who were on the roster last season to the transfer portal following spring practice. But despite the trio of Casey ThompsonLogan Smothers, and Richard Torres heading into the transfer portal, with Torres already finding a new home, Rhule is keeping the door open in case one of them wants to return.

Rhule did cause a bit of a stir when discussing three of his quarterbacks that recently entered the transfer portal. So, to prevent his statement from getting misconstrued any further, the Cornhusker’s head man decided to clarify his comment on whether or not he would accept any of the three quarterbacks back into his program.

“My point to them is very simple, ‘Hey guys, quarterback is so different, only one plays.; I was like, ;If you want to go look, you can still come back.’ So I don’t know that anyone will,” said Rhule.

“A couple of the guys, they still call us all the time. Like I had one guy call me today and say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this coach and this place?’ So, the doors open on that on our end because if you’re here, I want you to be all in on being here. Jeff (Sims) played well, and Heinrich (Haarberg) had a good spring. And so, I’d love to have one more guy. We have three scholarships if one of the guys wants to be here. But if it’s right for them to go; I saw Richard found a place. So yeah, just kind of open door.”
