Mickey Joseph expects Mark Whipple to coach from the box after taking vicious hit
It appears as if Nebraska offensive coordinator Mike Whipple will be ready for action for the Cornhuskers’ next game against Wisconsin. If he does coach on Saturday, the only question is where will he coach from; the sideline or the coach is skybox? Nebraska’s head coach Mickey Joseph answered that question during Tuesday’s press conference and cracked a few jokes about his offensive coordinator.
“Well, Sean, maybe you can convince him,” said Joseph when asked whether or not Whipple will coach from the coaches’ box. “I told him, in the beginning, to go to the box. Okay. And then he got wiped out. It was bad. But I think he’s going to go to the box now. And Andrew’s going to be in charge of that. So if it doesn’t happen, it’s going to be on Andrew. But, yeah, I think he’s going to go to the box.”
Whipple went down hard while on the sideline during a Saturday’s contest against Michigan. The unfortunate incident happened when the Cornhuskers’ defense drove Wolverines wide receiver A.J Henning out of bounds. Unfortunately, Whipple was too close to the collision and ended up being collateral damage in the process. The Nebraska coordinator hopes to return to playcalling action on Saturday when the Cornhuskers take on the Badgers. If Whipple is in the box, he’ll avoid additional collisions like he took against the Wolverines. However, fans won’t get to see him give his offense an earful as he’s routinely done this season.
Mickey Joseph shares how Nebraska overcame Chubba Purdy, Mark Whipple injuries
Injuries are an inevitability in football, but usually it’s the players who get hurt. Against Michigan on Saturday, Nebraska got a unique double-dose when quarterback Chubba Purdy and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple both got dinged up late in the first half.

With Purdy — already starting in place of normal starter Casey Thompson — out, the Cornhuskers turned to third-string quarterback Logan Smothers. And with Whipple getting medical attention during the half, interim head coach Mickey Joseph explained that the offensive adjustments fell to other assistants.
“Well we have some really good offensive coaches and they do their normal routine, making adjustments — without Whipple,” Joseph said postgame. “And then once got in, they let him know the adjustments that they made. But it wasn’t any different than any other times. We had to get Logan ready, but Logan was ready because he played a little bit of the first half.”
