The Nebraska Cornhuskers pulled off a 24-17 win against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday under interim head coach Mickey Joseph. While it was a good win for Joseph, many in the national media, including Pete Thamel have said it could be a matter of days before former Carolina Panthers’ head coach Matt Rhule is named as the new head man in Lincoln.

He’ll likely bring many of his own assistants, leaving many of the current Nebraska coaches scrambling for a job. Following the win over the Hawkeyes, Joseph responded to a question about if he and the current coaching staff in Nebraska know what lies ahead for them.

Mickey Joseph discusses the uncertain future

“No. No. We don’t. We can control what we’re able to control. We played this game to play this game. That’s not on us. Right now, we just sit back and play the waiting game. But, you know what? I’ve been through it before. I’ve been through it before, so I’m helping these coaches that haven’t been through it. We have a really good coaching staff and they’re all gonna land on their feet, because they’re good football coaches,” Joseph said.

He also discussed how much he respects every single member of the coaching staff because of the tremendous effort they put in during a season full of uncertainty. “You have to be a professional. There’s changes [that are going to be made] and they understand that. I take my hat off to them because I told them today, I really respect them. Because they didn’t quit. They stayed here to fight with the kids. Not one day did they say, ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this.’ You take your hat off to them because, you’ve gotta understand we had to hold this thing together for 11 weeks. Not 5 or 6, but 11. And they did it. We didn’t get the wins like we wanted, but we held it together,” Joseph said.

He brings up some very valid points that will likely get lost in this season for Nebraska fans. The coaches on the current staff that helped stay together for 11 weeks, despite facing constant uncertainty. That’s never an easy thing to do and that won’t be counted in the win or loss column for the staff, either. It’ll be exciting to think about the future with Matt Rhule, but Cornhusker fans shouldn’t forget the thankless job many of the members of the current coaching staff did in a very tough environment.

Nebraska wrapped up their 2022 football schedule with a 4-8 overall record. They finished 13th in the Big Ten standings.
