Interim Nebraska coach Mickey Joseph is living in the moment. He has no clue what lies ahead for his career beyond the last game of this season, but he’s simply enjoying the experience of coaching a Big Ten football team. Whether the Cornhuskers keep him or not, Joseph wants to squeeze whatever he can out of the final few weeks of this coaching experience.

He was asked this week about how he’s handling the unpredictable future of his career considering the widespread coaching search going on to possibly replace him.

“I don’t think it’s been difficult because I’ve been having fun, you know, getting it done,” Joseph responded. “Because I’m coming in every day to get a job done. I haven’t gotten the results that we wanted, but it’s a great feeling being around these kids and being around these coaches. They’re top-notch people. Not one person in this building has given up. Everybody comes in, they fight. Y’all see them, they fight until the end, you know. You could be in a situation right now where they could have gave up six weeks ago. But they didn’t.”

Joseph continued, telling folks not to worry about him. Mickey Joseph is doing alright, no matter what happens at the end of the season.

“So I’m having fun, I’m good. I mean, don’t worry about Mickey. Mickey’s gonna be okay. No no no, I don’t think it works like that. I think when they want to, if they want to interview after the season they’ll let you know or they’ll tell you that a head coach is coming in. I’m prepared for whatever.”

The words of a grateful man. Whether he is made the head coach even considered at the end of the year, Joseph is just happy to have had the opportunity to lead the Cornhusker program for a little while.

Speaking of the head coaching search, Will Compton reported Tuesday that former Carolina Panthers and Baylor football head coach Matt Rhule was in Lincoln and meeting with Nebraska about potentially taking the job. So the ‘Huskers are clearly flexing their options and shopping around for another coach. Hard to see them keeping Joseph as head coach, but hopefully the spry interim will remain on the staff in some capacity.
