Nebraska AD Trev Alberts gives initial details on coaching search following Scott Frost dismissal
Scott Frost is officially out as Nebraska football’s head coach. After yet another disappointing loss yesterday to Georgia Southern, the Cornhuskers made the call to relieve him of his duties. Now, it’s on AD Trev Alberts to nail his replacement in a program that desperately wants to see success.
Alberts met with the media this afternoon to discuss Frost’s firing and what’s next in Lincoln. He said the school is about to begin a national search and, with that in mind, he reminded Cornhusker fans to let this unfold rather than latching onto the rumor mill.

“Obviously we’re going to do a national search. We’re going to engage some third party help, mostly for logistics and other things,” said Alberts. “There will be a lot of rumors out there. These sorts of decisions are not made in a silo. If you hear (I’ve) reached out to X, Y, or Z coach, it doesn’t mean I’ve offered the job to them.”
Many considered Frost’s hire in 2018 a home run. He was a former alumnus who was having success during his previous stop with UCF. However, that wasn’t the case with a 16-31 record over five seasons at the helm. That’s why Alberts wants to get this right. Nebraska is a unique job that needs the right hire at this moment who will better overall encapsulate what Cornhusker football is.

“What does our unique culture need in terms of coaching? What is our culture going to be as a team?…I’d just love to see this team continue to grow, compete, and make progress. Have a team that represents the values of Nebraskans. Do the fundamental things that teams need to do to win games. I think we can get there,” said Alberts. “We will stop talking about championships or things we used to do. We’ll get really process oriented. When you do those fundamental, championship habits, those types of wins and things follow.”
This search will require Alberts to take as long as it takes. While it’s ideal to have someone in place for certain dates, he says he will not rush this decision. Firing Frost now will allow the athletic department to do what they need to during the season. That will give them plenty of time to handle this the right away.
“I think this gives us an opportunity to really do the necessary work. We need to dive into a real process that talks to a lot of people…We’re not going to hire coaches who don’t believe in what we believe in. (Nebraska) needs to take as long as it takes to find the right leader. Is there an ideal timeline? Sure. It’d be really nice to be able to get the person in place…but we won’t make decisions or rush things just to get a coach hired. We need to hire the right leader and the right fit.”
