No, Nebraska won’t be wearing the mascot inspired uniforms during a 2021 football game. That didn’t mean that Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts couldn’t have a little fun with it.

On Tuesday, a joke depicting uniforms inspired by Nebraska mascot Lil’ Red went viral on social media. The post went on to claim that the Huskers would wear the uniforms during their Sept. 18th game vs. Oklahoma. Below is the tweet with the “fake” uniforms.

According to Fansided.com, these uniforms were started as a joke on Reddit among Nebraska fans a few years ago. The joke ended up tricking a few people, including a few verified social media accounts, into thinking these uniforms would be real and worn during the game vs. Oklahoma.

Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts had fun with the post, saying on Twitter, “Hate to break it to everyone. There won’t be any overalls on our football uniforms this season. Lil Red will not be taking questions at this time, please respect his privacy.” Below is the tweet if you wanted to see it.

It’s been a very strange week for Nebraska football, as they had a launch party on Monday to launch their new alternate unis for the 2021 season. Then, apparently local media showed up to the event, only to find out that the reveal of the new jerseys would not be until later in August.

Staff members for Nebraska then pleaded with media and other members who were at the event to not share the pictures of the new jerseys. You can read more about the event from On3’s Tim Verghese.

It sounds like an absolute mess and it’s really confusing.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL TRADITION

It’s been a relatively dark century for the historic Nebraska football program. Though the Huskers claim 46 conference championships and five national championships, they last won a conference championship in 1999. Since moving to the Big Ten in 2012, the program has claimed only one division championship, in their debut year in the conference.

SCOTT FROST ON THE HOT SEAT

Nebraska head football coach Scott Frost enters the 2021 college football season season firmly on the hot seat. CBS Sports national college football writer Dennis Dodd discussed Frost’s fascinating situation on the Cover 3 College Football Podcast on Wednesday,

“I just wondered what Nebraska was — what’s its brand, does the average 18-year-old think of it? With Scott Frost a few years ago being the hip, young coach who had the chops, who had the ability, who had the background and it’s just completely fallen on its face — 12 and 20 in his three years, I think. And going into Year 4, what does that look like? When I suggested he was on the hot seat last year — ‘Well, he just signed an extension, wait a minute.’

Frost signed an extension back in 2019, that extends his contract from 2024 to 2026. Time will tell if he can actually make it to the end of that contract.
