Nebraska made another coaching change today via Twitter, announcing analyst Mike Cassano will be promoted to wide receivers coach following the firing of head coach Scott Frost. Current interim head coach Mickey Joseph was previously the receivers coach and alluded to Cassano stepping into his role prior to the official announcement at a press conference Tuesday.

“Cass is gonna handle that, the day-to-day operations, but I’ll still be involved with it,” Joseph said.

This decision was likely made by Joseph, as Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts said Sunday at his press conference that the firing of Frost was the only coaching change he planned on making, and that any additional changes would be Joseph’s responsibility and that he would support his decisions.

Cassano has over 15 years of coaching experience, seven under Frost, and has made stops at Miami, Florida International, U Mass, Eastern Michigan, and UCF. This is his fifth season with the Cornhuskers and has also assumed various recruiting and player personnel positions during his career.

Nebraska AD Trev Alberts addresses recruiting amid Scott Frost dismissal

Nebraska fired head coach Scott Frost following their upset loss to Georgia Southern. Athletic director Trev Alberts named wide receivers coach, associate head coach, and passing game coordinator Mickey Joseph the interim head coach of the team for the time being, but a big question mark with the current coaching turnover lies in recruiting.

“I’ll do whatever Mickey asks me to do, I really enjoy talking to the recruits, prospective recruits. You’ve probably seen me out on the field and I really enjoy talking to those young men,” Alberts said. “I will do anything I possibly can to be supportive of the football coaching staff, but I will not get in the way. And so ultimately what I would do with Scott is every time we talked I’d ask how can I help, am I doing anything that’s counterproductive.”

Nebraska’s 2022 recruiting class was ranked No. 7 in the Big Ten according to On3 Consensus, and it’s hard to imagine that the Cornhusker’s recent troubles and coaching turnover will help. Regardless, Alberts said he will do whatever he can to aid Mickey in the recruiting space during the current, changing times in Lincoln.

“I’ll do the same thing with Mickey, what can I do to help, I want him to be successful because ultimately that means our young men are being successful. So I’ll do whatever Mickey and the staff ask me to do,” Alberts said.
