Nebraska AD Trev Alberts addresses Scott Frost buyout following decision to move on
Nebraska will pay Scott Frost the full $15 million buyout after parting ways with the coach Sunday, according to Husker Online’s Sean Callahan. Cornhuskers athletic director Trev Alberts addressed the buyout with media Sunday afternoon, saying the school will honor the contract it agreed to.
“There’s no negotiated settlement,” Alberts said. “The University of Nebraska has a long history of living up to what we’ve agreed to. So the contract is what the contract is. Of course the university will comply as we always do.”
By firing Frost on Sept. 11, Nebraska is required to pay the full $15 million. Had it waited to do so until Oct. 1 or later, that sum would have been cut in half. However, after watching the Cornhuskers suffer a 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday, Alberts decided he couldn’t wait that long.

More on the Scott Frost firing
Frost ends his career in Lincoln with a 16-31 overall record. His tenure was marred by one-score losses, including a big one in Week 0 when Nebraska blew a second-half lead en route to a 31-28 loss to Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland.
The coach’s future came into question over the offseason following a 3-9 2021 season. Scott Frost signed a restructured contract, which resulted in a reduced buyout and a pay cut. He also revamped the coaching staff, bringing in Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple and LSU wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph as part of the overhaul.

Nebraska also brought in a new quarterback this season after Adrian Martinez entered the transfer portal, bringing in former Texas star Casey Thompson to lead the new-look offense. All told, the Cornhuskers brought in 16 transfers from the portal to fill holes on the roster.
But even after revamping his coaching staff and roster, Frost was unable to show much had changed across the first three games of his fifth season. After Saturday’s loss dropped the Cornhuskers’ record to 1-2, it was clear that it was time to move on.
Joseph will take over as Nebraska’s interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 season. The Cornhuskers will play their first game under his guidance against No. 6 Oklahoma at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.
