Nebraska is hoping to go on a run at this week’s Big Ten tournament and potentially play its way into the NCAA Tournament. The Cornhuskers got off to a heck of a start on Wednesday.

Designated hitter Charlie Fischer blasted a three-run homer to left field to give Nebraska a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Rutgers.

Nebraska did all of its damage in the opening inning with two outs as Max Anderson hit an infield single and Casey Burnham walked, before Fischer blasted a three-run opposite-field home run.

The blast brought the large group of Nebraska fans on hand to their feet.

The Big Ten tournament is being played this week at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while Rutgers is the No. 5 seed.

The winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between Rutgers and Nebraska will advance to face Maryland on Thursday. First pitch for the matchup with the Terrapins will be at 6 p.m.

Nebraska entered Wednesday’s game with a 31-21-1 record, including a 15-9 mark in Big Ten play. The Cornhuskers were hot entering the Big Ten tourney, having gone 6-1 in their previous seven games.

They continued to stay hot in the first inning on Wednesday, thanks in large part to Fischer. The grad student entered Wednesday with a .295 average for the Cornhuskers. He now has seven home runs and 36 RBIs on the season.

The tournament is double elimination, so even if Nebraska loses on Wednesday it won’t be eliminated.

The championship game, which the Cornhuskers are hoping to advance to, takes place Sunday at 2 p.m.
