The Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball team just pulled off an upset over the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Purdue Boilermakers. Nebraska took it to Purdue on their home court, picking up a double-digit win over their Big Ten rivals.

And following their victory, Cornhusker fans rushed the court to celebrate the win, officially kicking off the party in Lincoln, NE that’s sure to last into the night.

Nebraska was able to advance to 13-3 on the season after besting product in the first half 41-30 and in the second half 47-42 to pick up the 16-point victory. Boilermakers star big man Zach Edey was held in check on Tuesday night, finishing the game with just 15 points and seven rebounds.

The celebration wasn’t just limited to the student body and local fans of the program. One individual was able to spot Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule attending the party going down on the court.

Nebraska of to a hot start

Nebraska basketball is off to a hot start for their 2023-2024 campaign. Last season, the Cornhuskers finished the year with a 16-16 record and placed towards the bottom of the conference. This year is a different story for the Cornhuskers and their head coach, Fred Hoiberg, who are one of the best teams in the Big Ten this year at 13-3 and are owners of one of the best home records to start the year at 11-1.

If you’re looking for the player who is the engine for Nebraska’s success on the hardwood this year, look no further than guard Keisei Tominaga. Tominaga is Nebraska’s leading scorer on the season, averaging 14.2 points per game.

The senior guard also has an average of 2.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game to complement his scoring this season. Outside of Tominaga, junior forward Rienk Mast has been a steady hand in the paint for the Cornhuskers, nearly averaging a double-double on the season. MasT is averaging 12.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

Nebraska will look to keep this momentum going from its Tuesday night upset victory over Purdue on Friday night when they travel to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes currently have a 9-6 record and are 1-3 in conference play. However, Hoiberg and company should anticipate a hard-fought and scrappy matchup against one of the better defensive programs in the country.
