Nebraska has landed a huge commitment from defensive back Omar Brown, the 2019 FCS Defensive Freshman of the Year. Brown, previously at Northern Iowa, is already on campus at Nebraska, according to Allen Trieu of 247Sports.

As a freshman at Northern Iowa in 2019, Brown totaled 77 tackles with six interceptions. In addition to being the FCS Freshman of the Year, Brown was named a third-team AP All-American and Phil Steele All-American first-teamer.

Even with the FCS season being moved to the spring of 2021 instead of fall of 2020, Brown played a big role in Northern Iowa’s defense. He started all seven games, totaling 30 tackles with five pass breakups. Brown was an honorable mention All-MVFC selection.

In 2021, Brown played in seven games, totaling 33 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. In the seventh game, he suffered a season-ending injury. He was again an honorable mention for the MVFC All-Conference team.

Brown is now taking his talents to Nebraska

After a successful start to his collegiate career at the FCS level, Brown now looks to prove that he belongs playing against the best. At Nebraska, Brown will face off against some of the best teams in the country in the Big Ten. He felt like making the jump was the right move for his career.

“Everything went pretty fast because of how late I entered the portal,” Brown said, via Trieu, 247Sports. “I was just really big on my family able to come and see me play and at a bigger stage. It is not too far. I had a teammate at UNI that came to Nebraska and I talked to him and he hit me up right away and told me everything I needed to hear, gave me the information, told me the real and it just feels right. I’ll be able to showcase my talent nationally on television and it felt like the right thing to do for me.”

Ultimately, Brown wants to play football at the highest level in the NFL. By making the decision to transfer to Nebraska, Brown feels like he will be in a better position to achieve that goal.

“Man, it has been crazy crazy,” Brown added. “I’ve never experienced anything like this. I had to make sure everything was lined up and on point, but now that it’s behind me, I’m excited to build everything up and about what’s to come on a bigger stage. It has all happened fast, but it’s exciting to me that I am where I am in this point in my football career. I just needed that push. I’m a year or two away from going to the NFL and I’ll do everything I need to get there.”
