Nebraska will be shorthanded Wednesday night for its road matchup against Indiana. The Cornhuskers’ starting point guard has been ruled out.

Nebraska announced Sam Griesel will miss the matchup with the Hoosiers due to an illness. He’s the Cornhuskers’ second-leading scorer, averaging 11.3 points per game, and leads the team with 44 assists on the season — his first in Lincoln after transferring from North Dakota State.

Keisei Tominaga will start in Griesel’s place, The Lincoln Journal Star’s Amie Just reported.

Nebraska is trying to build off a monster top-10 victory over Creighton on Sunday, defeating the Bluejays 63-53 to improve to 6-3 on the young season. Griesel had a big day in that one, scoring 18 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out seven assists to help lead the Nebraska offense.

After that performance, Griesel — a Lincoln native — spoke at length about what it was like to knock off the rival Bluejays on their home court. It’s safe to say he enjoyed every minute of it.

“When I committed here, this was the game that I wanted the most, obviously, for a lot of reasons,” Griesel said, via On3 and Husker Online’s Robin Washut. “… Just thinking back to players that I idolized that wore this jersey that didn’t get this win, and especially in this arena. Then just walking around Lincoln, everyone has just been like, ‘Just beat Creighton this year! Just beat Creighton this year!’ It’ll be nice to have a great response to that this year.

“It’s hard to put into words. I get a little emotional about it just because it means so much to me and so much to this group and to this state. This is a day that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Now, Nebraska will try to pull off another top-25 upset against No. 14 Indiana. That game tips off Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
