Nebraska QB Jeff Sims discusses transfer decision, what attracted him to Lincoln
Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims got his first taste of what playing football in Memorial Stadium is like on Saturday afternoon during the Cornhuskers spring game. And Sims briefly spoke about his adjustment to Lincoln since transferring from Georgia Tech.
Speaking briefly with Big Ten Network’s Meghan McKeown, Sims recapped some of what went into his transfer decision and took stock of his spring game performance. He also got to share what about the school and town stood out to him on his visit.
“So I came on my visit and it was far better than what I expected. The facilities, the town, the fans, the people. It was just overall a good feel. You know, the city of Lincoln is very peaceful and that was something that really attracted me to this place,” Sims said.
As for his performance on the field, Sims came away feeling so-so. There were good things to build on but plenty of improvements to be made.
And while Sims surely came to Nebraska with every intent to be the starting quarterback, he’ll be competing with incumbent Casey Thompson, who won’t readily be unseated.
“I feel like it was pretty good. There’re some things that I can clean up, also, but we did some good things on offense and I mean just every moment from now on is a step forward,” Sims said.

The temperatures in Lincoln on Saturday were not the balmy averages that Sims is accustomed to in his home state of Florida or in Georgia, where he played prior to transferring.
But Sims said there’s nothing much more to handling the cold than getting out in and and growing accustomed to it. Plus, new head coach Matt Rhule isn’t going to keep his team practicing indoors perpetually.
“I mean, it’s just going out there and working at it. Coach, he has us out there every day in the cold so it’s kind of helping us get used to it. And at the end of the day, you just gotta go out there and play, you can’t think about,” Sims said.
Jeff Sims runs over defender, scores first TD of Nebraska career in spring game
He didn’t just score a touchdown — Sims broke two tackles and waltzed in for it on a designed quarterback run in the red zone, much to the adulation of the Nebraska fanbase.
It almost looked as if Sims made the defenders tackle themselves.
