Nebraska has an open job, with athletic director Trev Alberts deciding to fire Scott Frost on Sunday afternoon. Just when it seemed as if things could not get worse in Lincoln, Frost continually showed why they could. Saturday’s loss to Georgia Southern was the final nail in the coffin, meaning the Cornhuskers now have a coaching search on hand.

Plenty of names have already been linked with the job. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic was the latest to provide a list of potential candidates. Ten different names were mentioned, with only two having Big Ten connections. The Big 12 is highly represented here, having multiple current and former coaches named.

More on Nebraska coaching candidates from Bruce Feldman

The first three names listed by Feldman are all current Big 12 coaches and two come from the state of Kansas. Leipold current has the Jayhawks undefeated through two weeks and got a huge win on the road vs. West Virginia on Saturday. While he might not have the most eye popping resume, Leipold has won everywhere he has gone.

Patterson is somebody Feldman has dubbed as a potential candidate as well, bringing him back into the head coaching world. He is currently working with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian as a special assistant after his long tenure with TCU. Nebraska would theoretically be hiring one of the top defensive minds in the sport.

Of course, looking internally will be an option for Alberts. Mickey Joseph was given the interim tag after Frost was let go on Sunday. Now, he will have the opportunity to prove himself the rest of the season, with the Cornhuskers having nine games remaining on the schedule. Joseph will kick things off on Saturday with a huge rivalry matchup against Oklahoma.
