Report: Matt Rhule, Nebraska expected to hire Dana Holgorsen as offensive consultant
Dana Holgorsen will reportedly be joining the staff at Nebraska.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported the hiring for the Cornhuskers on Tuesday. With that, Holgorsen will come to Lincoln to be an offensive consultant on the staff under Matt Rhule.
“Sources: Nebraska is adding former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen to the staff as an offensive consultant,” Thamel tweeted this morning. “He’ll work with the offensive staff in a role that will evolve as the season goes on.”
This comes after the ‘Huskers pursued Holgorsen this last offseason. After he became available on the coaching market at the end of November, Nebraska was confirmed to be in talks with him early in January. It also comes after Holgorsen spent time at TCU this year as an analyst and scout for the Horned Frogs.
Holgorsen has spent the past three decades on collegiate sidelines, including being a head coach in the 13 seasons prior to this one with eight at West Virginia and five at Houston. The Cougars fired him last offseason with him posting a record of 31-28 (.525). That brought his overall mark as a head coach to 92-69 (.571).

Over the 2000s, Holgorsen worked as an assistant in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State, Houston, and Texas Tech. He did so with work as an offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and receivers coach. He also worked at Wingate, Mississippi College, and Valdosta State in similar offensive roles during the 1990s.
Nebraska is doing this after struggling on offense for the last few weeks. Over the first five games of the season where they were at 4-1, the Cornhuskers posted 30.8 ppg. with 405.4 yards of offense on average. Then, in October, they went 1-3 as they averaged 14.5 ppg. with 290 total yards per game.
Nebraska still just one win shy of their first postseason berth in eight years. That gives Holgorsen and the ‘Huskers two weeks with this bye to close well with three games to go.
