Nebraska head coach Scott Frost revealed that the Cornhuskers had changed their recruiting structure as a result of the NCAA Transfer Portal. Frost has added 14 players via the transfer portal this offseason, including former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson and Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy. The portal has become such a major part of college football now that Frost admitted they had to restructure their personnel to handle it.

Nebraska adapting to the transfer portal

“It’s a pain in the ass, but it’s helped us,” admitted Frost. “And I think it can be big for Nebraska. There’s so much passion around Nebraska football and we’ve already gotten so much support for our players with NIL, and that combination of NIL and Transfer Portal has helped us add some really good pieces. So we’re continuing to look for opportunities for our players and people that wanna help support our players through NIL. And that’s helped us get some kids in the transfer portal. It changes the way you think, roster management is tough now, but I think it can really help us add some good players to our team.

“Luckily we can’t have anything to do with NIL stuff, which is great. So that I don’t have people coming in and asking me — because I don’t have anything to do with it. Roster management is tough. It used to be, you lose 25 kids and you recruit 25 new freshmen. And now you’ve gotta save spots and kids are leaving and coming and going and you might not have predicted it. It’s a little more difficult than it used to be.

“We’ve restructured our recruiting department in the offseason and part of it was to address some of the changes that are happening with the way things are being done.”

Frost’s changes this season will be under more scrutiny than normal as he enters 2022 possibly on the coaching hot seat. In his four seasons at the helm, the Cornhuskers head man has still yet to deliver a winning season or take the team to a bowl game.

Although Nebraska’s 3-9 finish from this past season seems to indicate it was one of the worst teams in college football, the Cornhuskers were closer to success than you might think. All of their losses came by single digits, and if just a few plays went differently they could have been sitting with a winning record. That’s partly why Frost said he isn’t making any major changes to his coaching strategy in 2022.

The addition of major talent such as Casey Thompson via the transfer portal will likely be a determining factor in how long Frost leads the Cornhuskers out of the locker room.
