Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers added a few pieces to both sides of the ball this offseason through the transfer portal. Offensively, Nebraska notably added quarterback Casey Thompson and wide receiver Marcus Washington, both of whom came from Texas.

On Saturday, Frost assessed Washington’s progress as he has tried to get accustomed to the Nebraska offense. Early on, Frost has been very impressed. He even went as far to say that Washington is even better than he expected him to be at this point.

“He’s done a great job,” Frost said of Washington. “Honestly, he’s been better than I expected. He’s been a great teammate, he’s worked hard, he’s shown up on special teams. So that says a lot about his character. He’s a really good player and usually when you get a new player in the program it takes a while to learn.

“It’s quicker if you’ve played a lot of football and a lot of it becomes translation and you’ve seen things before, you’ve been coached on things before. He definitely was ahead of the curve as far as coming in and picking things up.”

Washington, Thompson bring chemistry to the Nebraska offense

Washington played three years at Texas, hauling in 25 receptions. Last season, he caught 18 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 15.4 yards per reception.

As Washington and Thompson both try to learn a new system at Nebraska, the two have pulled from their prior chemistry at Texas. And Thompson believes that his wide receiver has gotten a lot better.

“I would say that our relationship has continued to grow. It feels the exact same, same Marcus I knew at Texas,” said Thompson. “He’s better now, honestly. He looks quicker and faster than I remember seeing him. I guess the strength and conditioning he was doing down there worked out for him.

“He’s picked up the offense pretty good. I’ve tried to do my best to just translate the language. When he first got here it was funny because we’d have plays and we’d have stuff that we’d do (where) I’d give him a signal or a play that’s an old Texas play and I say run it just like this…or run it just like you did last year against (whoever). It’s just nice to have that experience and camaraderie with Marcus.”

The two also have a great bond off the field, which will only help their chemistry once they step on it.

“We’re really good friends,” added Thompson. “We were roommates with each other last year. Every time we went to the hotel at Texas, we were roommate buddies on Friday nights. We talk a lot and we’re very close…Marcus is doing a great job. He’s really staying positive.”
