Scott Frost reveals the difference in teams compared to last matchup

Nebraska finished few games last year without any drama. But their 2021 matchup with Northwestern was one of those on the positive side for the Cornhuskers. In fact, the game against the Wildcats was easily Nebraska’s best performance of the season as they tanned NW’s hide by a 56-7 score. Even Ohio State struggles to beat Big Ten teams that bad.

Nobody expected Nebraska to repeat that domination this past weekend in Ireland. But given the 2021 result, the Huskers were certainly favorites, but fell regardless in another one of Scott Frost’s token one-score losses. Of course aided by some questionable calls which have dominated headlines.

But what was the big difference this time around, for Northwestern to go from 49-point losers to winning the game outright? According to Frost, physicality. He said as much during his post-game presser following the loss.

“They did a good job with scheme stuff. We gave up a pass we shouldn’t have given up against unbalanced that we just busted. You got to give them a lot of credit. That’s a team that we handled last year. Thought we won the match physically last year. We didn’t win it today and I’m surprised by that. Because what I’ve seen from the guys in training camp and leading up to the season, I think we got a good team. We didn’t get it done today. I feel terrible for the guys.”

Then, one bold reporter wondered aloud what Frost thinks of his future as the Husker head coach after now having lost seven games in a row dating back to last year. Really, there’s not much you can say in response to a statement like that, but Frost again harked on the physicality while also noting that he knows he needs to win games to keep the gig.

“Well you got to win in this business to keep your job. That’s the way it is. I love Nebraska. I love the state of Nebraska. Love these fans. That’s sacrifice to come over here. I want to thank them, the guys, the coaches. They did everything the right way leading up to this. I wouldn’t change a thing about the way we handled the travel. The kids were dialed in. I give Northwestern a lot of credit. Again, they they were more physical than us I thought up front at times today. Probably more than we were and that was probably the difference. And we got to get this turned around.”
