Scott Frost weighs in on Nebraska quarterback battle, naming starter
While speaking at Big Ten media days, Nebraska coach Scott Frost outlined his timeframe for naming a starting quarterback in their QB battle. Incoming transfer Casey Thompson from Texas is the favorite heading into their fall camp, but Frost made sure to let everyone know that he will take as long as he needs to name a starter.
Scott Frost on Nebraska’s quarterback battle
Frost made an appearance on the Big Ten Network following Monday’s round of Big Ten media days interviews, and the broadcast crew asked him if Thompson was in a similar offense at Texas as the one he was attempting to learn at Nebraska.
“He’s been a part of a couple of offenses now,” said Frost. “Sark [Steve Sarkisian] does an unbelievable job down there. I think a lot of the schemes probably carry over, but anybody that comes in has to at least learn a new language and some new details. He’s done a good job and there’s gonna be a competition at that position so, looking forward to watching that unfold during camp and may the best man win.”
Frost was then asked if he had a timeline that he preferred for when he would name his starting quarterback for this season, as this is his first time overseeing such a fresh competition as the Cornhuskers’ head man. He went on to explain that it was pointless trying to hide his decision just for the sake of hiding it from other teams — believing that his entire staff and team would know who it was just from practice before he had to make the official call.

“I don’t care,” Frost said about having a timeline in mind. “Whenever it’s clear who it’s gonna be. Obviously Casey has played a lot of football and is the favorite, but we’ve got some talented kids behind him that have done really good things through spring and summer. So we’re gonna get a lot of reps in fall camp, we’ll figure it out.
“It’s hard to keep secrets in Nebraska, but as much as we can we keep things in-house. I don’t care if it’s right up to the first game. The people in the program are gonna know who’s playing best and I think it’ll be pretty clear with all the reps we get who the best player is.”
