Nebraska’s Silas Allred did it again against Penn State’s Max Dean. In the 197 lbs. Round of 16, Allred beat Dean for the second straight time after beating him in the Big Ten finals two weeks ago.

This time, Allred beat Dean 7-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals. In Thursday night’s match, the Husker left no doubt.

Allred was more offensive than the defending national champion and he made it count to get a chance to clinch All-American status Friday morning.

To start it out, Allred opened with a takedown, followed by a Dean escape. In the second period, Dean evened things up with an escape.

Allred landed a takedown with less than 10 seconds to go in the second period to take a 4-2 lead going into the final frame. After going back and forth in neutral, Allred landed the clinching takedown and managed to add riding time.

Next up for Allred is No. 1 seed Nino Bonaccorsi (Pitt) for a chance to get to the semifinals. The winner clinches All-American status.

Dean fell to the wrestlebacks and needs to win three in a row to become a four-time All-American.

Over the course of the three-day tournament, wrestlers can achieve national champion status by going 5-0 in their bracket, through Saturday night’s finals. The top eight placewinners in each bracket are considered All-Americans.

Losing one match does not eliminate a wrestler from competition. The consolation bracket is designed to determine the remaining spots on the podium (third through eighth place).

Since there are 33 wrestlers in each weight, the competitors seeded No. 32 and 33 compete in a “pigtail bout” prior to the first round to determine who matches up against the No. 1 seed in Round 1.

Losing the pigtail drops the wrestler to the consolation bracket where there is still opportunity to finish as high as third place in the weight class.
