Tommi Hill, Tristan Alvano injury updates: Matt Rhule shares latest on Nebraska stars entering bye week
The bye for Nebraska football in Week 7 will allow several Cornhuskers dealing with injury an opportunity to recover. That includes cornerback Tommi Hill and kicker Tristan Alvano.
Hill has sat out the past two contests with a foot injury despite dressing out and warming up, while Alvano has missed the previous three games with a groin injury. The latter started the first three games at kicker and Nebraska’s special teams has struggled in his absence. The Cornhuskers are 1-of-5 on their field goal attempts since he went down.
Rhule had good news on his progress as well as that of Hill during a Monday press conference.
“I think Tristan’s potentially going to begin the process of testing where he’s at and whatever that means in terms of when he’s comfortable,” the coach said. “Tommi is trending closer and closer. Up until kickoff, we thought he was gonna go. So it’s just a day-by-day thing with him.”
Hill had 14 tackles and an interception that he returned for a touchdown in the four games prior to his injury. Jeremiah Charles has seen an increased role the past couple of weeks with Hill out, but it sounds like he is close to making a return in Week 8.
Rhule also addressed sophomore transfer Blye Hill, who has yet to see action in a game this season. It seems that the plan is to redshirt him, but that still leaves four games that he could potentially appear in during the back half of this year.

“Blye Hill, we had him ready to go but we didn’t play him because Ceyair (Wright) played so well,” Rhule said. “So to me, you’re looking at a guy who’s got four open games in the next six games. So pending a bomb going off, you can probably play him in four games. Amare Sanders has a game left. Larry Tarver has two games left. So a bunch of these young players who are developing and getting better and better and better, they have some opportunities here.
“Blye wants to play, so if Tommi can’t go or Ceyair were to get hurt, Blye would be right there. But Jeremiah Charles has done a good job stepping in as needed.”
Nebraska will hope for positive injury news before it kicks off against No. 18 Indiana on Oct. 19 in Bloomington.
