Tony White amazed by Matt Rhule's involvement in practice, camps
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has barreled headfirst into the challenges and responsibilities of being the Cornhuskers head coach. So much so that the head coach is going above and beyond what one might expect him, according to defensive coordinator Tony White.
White was coaching a recent satellite camp for Nebraska when Rhule showed up. And rather than just stand off to the side and observe while offering occasional coaching pointers, he got right into the action.
“Tell you what, again, it just continues to amaze me, all the things — how humble he is. It’s one thing for the coaches to come out here, like you said. It’s another thing for him to go and grab a stopwatch and say, ‘Hey, look, I ain’t got nothing to do. I’m going to help you time. Hey, let me do this drill over here.’ You know what I’m saying?” White said.
For White, it’s a window into the kind of person Rhule is and how he’s building up the goodwill and support for the Cornhuskers after the shortcomings of the previous coaching staff.
“Again, that’s what makes Coach Rhule special and that’s what we’re here for,” White said.
Rhule stressed the importance of camps in recruiting
Recruiting is the foundation of how a college roster is built. Because of that, there is a lot of competition in recruiting and it ends up taking tons of time and effort to do properly. As Rhule explained, one thing that helps in this process is using satellite camps.

Rhule broke down why these camps were so important while he was at one in Texas this offseason.
“Well, you know, obviously the University of Nebraska and a lot of guys on our staff have some recognition here in the state,” Matt Rhule said. “This is a priority for us, recruiting-wise.”
Rhule emphasized that satellite camps give coaches a chance to go out and build relationships in states like Texas where it’s important for the Cornhuskers to recruit. By making their presence felt there, the Nebraska coaching staff can build its recruiting base for the future.
“So, I want to make sure that we have a presence here, whether it’s visiting with high school coaches or seeing these student-athletes, whether they’re the guys we’re gonna recruit this year, they’re younger guys, you know, I just think it’s about making sure that we stay relevant here and our brand is known.”
