Nebraska men’s basketball is heading to Las Vegas for the College Basketball Crown, while the women’s basketball team’s season came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That means there won’t be any more games played at Pinnacle Bank Arena this year.

When the teams return next season, though, there will be a big change. Nebraska AD Troy Dannen announced a “major” upgrade, and it features Herbie Husker.

The beloved mascot will now be on the halfcourt logo at PBA, Dannen announced. Currently, a script “Huskers” sits at half court, but that will be changing in 2025-26.

Nebraska modernized Herbie Husker in 2023 and unveiled his new look at the first spring football game under head coach Matt Rhule. The school also modified the cartoon, which now holds up a No. 1 instead of an “OK” signal.

Now, Herbie Husker is set to be at halfcourt for men’s and women’s basketball games. The state of Nebraska will still be behind the logo, as was the case before.

Both Nebraska programs made postseason

The Huskers’ women’s basketball team fell in the first round of March Madness last week. Nebraska made the field as a No. 10 seed, but lost to No. 7 Louisville 68-53 in Friday’s tournament opener. That meant the Cornhuskers ended the season with a 21-12 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Big Ten action during the regular season.

On the men’s side, Nebraska isn’t quite done. The Cornhuskers are one of 16 teams to play in the College Basketball Crown, which will get underway from Las Vegas later this month. They will tip things off against Arizona State in the first round March 31.

Fred Hoiberg said Nebraska could have called it a year following the Big Ten Tournament, but he left it up to the players. When he brought up the possibility of playing a postseason event, they didn’t hesitate – and there are also NIL opportunities in play now, the College Basketball Crown announced Tuesday.

“We have a leadership group, and I brought them up to the office, and we sat in there and talked, and it was unanimous that they wanted to play,” Hoiberg said. “There wasn’t one guy that wavered at all, and that included Brice (Williams) and Juwan (Gary).

“Brice was very vocal. We had a team meeting that afternoon, and he said, ‘Guys, we’re playing in this. This isn’t one foot in. We’re going to have to go out there and do everything we can to compete for a championship.’”
