It’s almost inevitable these days that when a college football coaching job — particularly one as resource rich as Nebraska — comes open, Urban Meyer comes up. Rarely, if ever, is the Meyer-to-[insert school here] chatter realistic, but on Saturday the two-time national champion is at least actually, physically in Lincoln for Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff, and the Cornhusker faithful made a statement.

Sitting on set with his fellow Fox hosts in front of a throng of red clad Nebraska fans, Meyer was regaled with a chorus of “We Want Urban!” chants.

Reggie Bush, one of Meyer’s counterparts on the show, gave a hearty “Go Big Red!” yell but was then drowned out by more chants for Meyer.

Despite being at one of the lowest points in the history of its football program, Nebraska is still likely an enticing job due to the Big Ten money and institutional commitment to getting things back on track.

Even still, it’d be a long shot for Meyer to be stalking the sidelines with a headset in Lincoln any time soon.

Meyer has been contacted by Nebraska, according to a report

It’s fortuitous that the week after Nebraska finally jettisoned now-former head coach Scott Frost, three-time national champion coach Urban Meyer would be on campus. Now, the explicit reason for Meyer’s visit is obvious: He’s on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff pregame show, which was broadcasting live from Lincoln before the Cornhuskers embarked on the post-Frost era against Oklahoma.

A few hours after Meyer basked in front of a red-clad crowd chanting “We Want Urban!” during the broadcast, CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd reported that Meyer has been “contacted” by Nebraska regarding the job. While Meyer is not expressly a candidate, per the report, he was pinged to help as the search for a new coach takes shape.

“It was not made clear whether Meyer was asked about his interest in holding the job,” Dodd wrote.

Meyer’s name has frequently come up when college head coaching jobs have come open since he retired from coaching Ohio State after the 2018 season. He’s won a national championship there (2014) and two at Florida (2006, 2008).

Meyer most recently coached the Jacksonville Jaguars to start the 2021 season, but was fired after just 13 games in a tenure marked by major off field gaffes, negative press and an entirely subpar on-the-field product.
