As Nebraska baseball started its 2025 season, the Cornhuskers lost one of their own. Longtime broadcaster Greg Sharpe died of cancer last week, and head coach Will Bolt said the team will dedicate the rest of its season to him.

Bolt opened is press conference Wednesday by reflecting on Sharpe’s impact on the program. He called Nebraska baseball games since his arrival in 2008 and was a beloved figure around Huskers athletics, and Bolt said he was “part of our family.”

As he looked back on his relationship with Sharpe, Bolt said the rest of the season will be in his honor. He also offered condolences on behalf of the program to Sharpe’s family.

“Not one for opening statements very often, but felt like today, obviously with Greg’s passing, a lot of emotion over the weekend for the team, for me, personally,” Bolt said. “I know a lot of our guys, obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the Sharpe family. Knowing that we’re better off for having known Greg and having a chance to be around Greg for many, many years. Just his impact that he had on all of us, I think, is something pretty unique and pretty special.

“We didn’t just lose somebody that was there and called our games. He was part of our family and part of our team. I know our players felt the same way. Thinking about Amy and the girls and the rest of the Sharpe family right now. I know our guys want to dedicate the rest of our season to Greg.”

Sharpe arrived in Lincoln as 2008 and served as the voice of Nebraska football and baseball. He died Feb. 14 after a nearly year-long battle with cancer. He also served as the host of Sports Nightly and was the 2024 Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year.

Amid his battle, Nebraska honored Sharpe, who kept working as much as he could. The Cornhuskers also honored him by renaming the radio booth the Greg Sharpe Radio Booth just last month.

“On behalf of everyone in the Nebraska Athletic Department, I would like to share our deepest condolences with the family of Greg Sharpe,” Nebraska AD Troy Dannen said in a statement. “This is a tough day for everyone. Not only those who were close to Greg and those who had the opportunity to work with him, but also for Husker fans who have fond memories of Greg’s calls of iconic moments in Nebraska history.

“Greg was an incredible person and was a friend to everyone. Simply put, he defined what it meant to be a Husker, and he will always be a Husker.”
