Former Nebraska receiver Zavier Betts was arrested early Sunday morning after being stopped for speeding around 1:30 a.m. by the La Vista Police Department in Sarpy County, Neb., according to a report from KETV 7 Omaha, an ABC affiliate.

Betts played two seasons at Nebraska before former coach Scott Frost said he was no longer part of the team back in March.

According to the KETV report, Betts had a misdemeanor warrant in Iowa for possession of a controlled substance and failed to show up for his court date.

Betts had contributed at Nebraska for two seasons prior to his dismissal from the team. He logged 12 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown, then recorded 20 catches for 286 yards as a sophomore.

During his sophomore season he also tallied three carries for 109 yards and a touchdown, breaking an 83-yard touchdown run against Northwestern.

Betts was a former four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, ranked as the No. 106 overall player in his class. He ranked as the No. 19 receiver in the country and the top overall player in the state of Nebraska during the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Nebraska’s recent surge ends at Purdue

Nebraska had bounced back nicely following the ouster of Frost and a subsequent rout at the hands of Oklahoma, winning back-to-back games under interim coach Mickey Joseph prior to this weekend.

But on top of the news that Zavier Betts was arrested, Nebraska fans also had to do with that little spurt of success on the gridiron coming to an end.

The Cornhuskers fought hard in a 43-37 loss to Purdue but ultimately fell back below .500 again on the season, at 3-4 overall.

Joseph and Nebraska are also dealing with some injuries that have caused some lineup shifts. Linebacker Nick Henrich was injured in the game against Purdue, and his status will bear monitoring.

The Cornhuskers also worked with two different starting offensive linemen on the right side of the line on Saturday, attempting to get some better results. Instead, Purdue tallied four sacks of quarterback Casey Thompson, matching his season high. Rattled, Thompson threw two interceptions in the loss, also matching a season high.
