Monte Watkins injury update: New Mexico State RB stretchered off after hit on fumble
Diehard college football fans are tuning in on ESPN2 on Wednesday night as the New Mexico State Aggies are taking on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. One player suffered a pretty serious scare in the first half, when New Mexico State running back Monte Watkins was injured after being hit shortly after fumbling the ball during a trick play.

According to Thomas Ashworth, he currently has feeling in all of his extremities. “We’ve been told New Mexico State running back Monte Watkins has feeling in all of his extremities. He left the first half with paramedics after taking a brutal hit,” Ashworth tweeted during halftime on Wednesday night.
Before exiting the game, Watkins had two carries for 14 yards. He’s seen action in all six of NMSU’s game this year, with his best performance coming against the Liberty Flames. He hauled in a 64-yard touchdown catch, his only score of the season thus far. New Mexico State lost that game in a close one, 30-24.
Unfortunately for NMSU, Jacksonville State cruised to an easy win. JSU jumped out to a 33-6 lead in the first half and never looked back. They outscored the Aggies 21-7 in the second half, stretching their lead even more. Jacksonville State running back Tre Stewart had a spectacular night. He had 150 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns. He rattled off 21 carries for 118 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and one catch for 32 yards and a touchdown as a receiver.

Watkins has been with New Mexico State since 2022. Before joining the Aggies, he spent the 2021 season with the TCU Horned Frogs, where he tallied 49 rushing yards and 41 receiving yards.
New Mexico State dropped to 1-5 overall on the 2024 campaign. Next up, they’ll face off against Louisiana Tech on Tuesday, Oct. 15th. Kick time for that one is set for 9:00 PM EST.
