Adam Schefter: Bill Belichick, UNC met for 5 hours to discuss head coaching job
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Bill Belichick met with North Carolina officials for five hours amid the interview process.
In a bombshell report, Belichick reportedly interviewed for the Tar Heels’ head coaching job. It would be quite the change from his long standing career in the NFL.
But as Schefter reported, Belichick wants to coach and UNC is in play.
“From my vantage point, the talks with North Carolina are real,” Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show. “I understand he met with them yesterday for five hours. I don’t think you spend five hours after days of discussions with the university if there’s not something to it. Now, whether or not North Carolina can put together a package that’s attractive and compelling enough for a Bill, whether that’s ultimately what he decides to do, we’ll see.
“His father was an assistant coach there. Someone sent me a picture yesterday of him sitting in the stands in that stadium. I believe it was in 1959, so there’s some sentimental tie, I would think, to North Carolina with his father having been an assistant coach on that staff. And I don’t think Bill really cares where he’s coached. He wants to coach. He’s been great this year as a media darling and a media star, and he can keep doing that if he wants, but at his core, in his soul, he’s a football coach.”

Bill Belichick serious candidate for North Carolina?
Belichick interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons job last offseason, but was passed over in favor of Raheem Morris. So, if the perceived coaching GOAT wants another crack, why not North Carolina?
“When the season ended, NFL teams had an opportunity to hire him,” Schefter said. “At one point, it looked like he was on track to get that Atlanta job, and then people stepped in, and for whatever reason, he didn’t get that job. And so I don’t think he wants to wait around and count on something that he doesn’t know he will get when he wants to be a coach. And people thought, ‘Oh, he wants the record.’ Well, I’m sure maybe the record may be in his mind, but I don’t think that’s what drives Bill Belichick. I think he loves to coach, and if this is a vehicle to do it, and it’s back at North Carolina, which some people wouldn’t have expected, then why not explore that? I don’t know what he’ll decide.
“I don’t know what will happen, but what I can tell you is there are ongoing conversations between him and the university. He definitely is considering it. There are other candidates who have been dropping out of the North Carolina race, whether they’re not interested, or they feel like Bill is the guy that the school wants to hire, or whatever it may be. So this has gone on, I think a little bit longer than people expected it to. And it’s been a little bit more hot and heavy than people thought it would be.”
